Hyman (Hy) Kaplan, a member of the IES for 50 years, is a Member Emeritus who has received the Distinguished Service Award. He lives in Tucson, AZ, with his wife, Susan Vardon, and their 2 cocker spaniels. He continues to be active with is own consulting electrical and illumination company, Hy-Lite Design, Inc.
Presently, he is a member of the ASHRAE/IES 90.1 Committee, the IES Security Lighting and Sustainable Lighting Committees, and the IALD Energy & Sustainability Committee. In the past, he chaired the IESNA committees that produced the 1986 Recommended Practice for Lighting Merchandise Areas and the 1997 Design Guide for Lighting for Automated Teller Machines.
Hy currently is the Chair of the City of Tucson/Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code Committee. When not busy with work or his volunteer activities, he enjoys traveling with his wife and last year toured China in conjunction with a solar eclipse and went whale watching at Laguana de San Ignasius in Baja California, Mexico.
