    Product Detailed Description

Standard 189.1 provides a total building sustainability approach for those who design, build and operate green buildings. From site location to energy use to recycling, this standard sets the foundation for green buildings through its adoption into local codes. The Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). The standard was written to be the first code-intended commercial green building standard in the United States.

    Features:

    • Provides a compilation of criteria that must be met to in order to be considered a “green” building.  (It is neither a design guide nor a rating system.)
    • Goal is to achieve a minimum of 30 percent reduction in energy cost over those found in ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007
    •  Key Topic Coverage
    • ANSI accredited

This standard is under continuous maintenance.  Updates are available at: www.ashrae.org/greenstandard.  A user manual is planned to assist in understanding how to apply the standard.

    Additional Points:

    • Covers all nonresidential spaces and all residential spaces more than three stories
    • U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE), through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimates 10 to 34 percent energy savings over Standard 90.1-2007 (18 percent weighted average across all building types)
    • Relative to Standard 90.1, the goal of 189.1 is not just energy efficiency but a balance of environmental responsibility, resource efficiency, occupancy comfort and well-being and community sensitivity as well as support the goal of sustainable development.
    • Developed through consensus with four public reviews over the past three years
